Why Does My Circuit Breaker Keep Tripping?

A tripping breaker is not a malfunction. It is a protective device doing its job, and the pattern of when it trips usually points at the cause.

The instinct when a breaker trips is to reset it and move on. That is fine once. When it becomes routine, the breaker is telling you something specific, and the timing of the trips is the best clue available.

Overload: too much on one circuit

The most common cause. A circuit is carrying more current than it is rated for, usually because several demanding devices are running at once. The signature is predictable: it trips when the same combination of things is on, and holds fine otherwise.

The fix is redistributing load or adding capacity — moving a device to another circuit, or adding a dedicated circuit for equipment that draws heavily. Space heaters, window units, shop tools, and countertop appliances are frequent culprits.

Short circuit: an unintended path

When a hot conductor contacts a neutral or ground directly, current spikes and the breaker opens immediately. This version trips instantly and repeatedly, often the moment the breaker is reset, and may be accompanied by a pop, a scorch mark, or a smell. A short is a fault to find, not a load to manage.

Ground fault

Current escaping to ground trips GFCI protection and can trip a breaker. Moisture is the usual cause in outdoor boxes, garages, and bathrooms — which is why these trips cluster after heavy rain and clear up as things dry. A recurring wet-weather trip points at water intrusion somewhere in the circuit.

Arc fault

AFCI breakers detect the electrical signature of arcing, which can occur at a damaged cord, a loose connection, or a pinched wire. They can also react to certain motors and electronics. Nuisance trips are worth investigating rather than dismissing, because the distinction between a false positive and a real loose connection is not something to guess at.

A failing breaker

Breakers are mechanical and they wear, particularly after many trips or years of heat. A breaker that trips with little load, feels loose, or will not stay set may be the problem itself — but it should be the conclusion after the circuit has been examined, not the first assumption.

What not to do

  • Do not install a higher-rated breaker to stop the tripping — the wire behind the wall is unchanged and loses its protection
  • Do not reset repeatedly when there is heat, smell, or noise at the panel
  • Do not assume an AFCI or GFCI trip is a defect in the device

Useful notes to collect

Write down which breaker, what was running, how long it held, and whether the trip is immediate or delayed. Those four details narrow the cause substantially and make a service request far more actionable.
