What Size Electrical Service Does a Modern Home Need?

There is no single right answer, but there is a right method. Service size is determined by the loads a house actually carries, not by its square footage.

Ask what size electrical service a home needs and you will hear 200 amps more often than anything else. It is a reasonable default for a lot of newer construction, and a bad way to answer the question, because service size follows from load — not from a round number.

What the number means

The amperage of a service is the maximum current the utility connection, meter, and main equipment are built to deliver at once. It is a ceiling on simultaneous demand, not a measure of quality. A 100-amp service is not inferior equipment; it is a smaller ceiling.

Why the ceiling started getting hit

Homes from earlier decades were designed around a shorter list of major electrical loads. Heating was frequently gas. Air conditioning was smaller or absent. There was one refrigerator, no second one in the garage, and nothing charging in the driveway.

  • Heat pumps and electric auxiliary heat
  • Electric water heaters, including tankless units with substantial demand
  • Electric ranges, ovens, and induction cooktops
  • EV charging at Level 2
  • Pools, spas, well pumps, and detached workshops
  • Home offices with continuous equipment loads

How the size is actually determined

A load calculation accounts for the fixed loads in a house, the largest intermittent loads, and the reality that not everything runs simultaneously. It is arithmetic performed against the actual equipment in a specific home, and it is the basis for deciding whether an existing service is adequate.

This is why a 2,400-square-foot house with gas heat, gas cooking, and one car can be comfortable on a service that would be strained by a smaller all-electric home with an EV. Square footage is a weak proxy; equipment is the real driver.

Capacity versus circuit count

Running out of breaker spaces is not the same problem as running out of capacity, though they often arrive together. A sub-panel can add spaces without adding service capacity. Increasing the service addresses total available power. Knowing which limitation you are hitting keeps the conversation focused.

Planning for what comes next

If a service upgrade is already on the table, it is worth naming what you might add in the next several years — EV charging, a generator connection, a shop, an addition. Sizing for known future load during one project is nearly always simpler than revisiting the service later.
