If an inspection has identified aluminum branch wiring, that is worth stating up front in any service request — it changes the conversation immediately.
Accumulated modifications
- Circuits extended repeatedly to reach additions, porches, or outbuildings
- Junctions hidden behind finished surfaces instead of in accessible boxes
- Mixed-era work where each renovation added its own approach
- Panels with breakers that no longer match their labels
- Outdoor and shed circuits added without outdoor-rated components
In practice, this accumulation causes more problems in older homes than the original wiring does. Sixty-year-old work performed carefully often outlasts a decade-old addition done in a hurry.
Climate factors that matter locally
Humidity, heat, and summer storm activity are constants here. They affect outdoor receptacles, exterior panels, landscape lighting, crawlspace and attic runs, and anything protected by a cover that has cracked in the sun. Whole-home surge protection comes up frequently for the same reason, particularly in households with substantial electronics or well equipment.
A practical order of operations
If you are buying, renovating, or simply uneasy about an older home's wiring, the useful first step is an evaluation of the actual condition — panel, grounding, receptacle protection, and any visible modifications — rather than a decision about rewiring made in advance. Scope follows condition, not the other way around.
